'Horrific' sex attack on toddler

16 May 2011 Last updated at 14:09 GMT Piotr Skut Piotr Skut claimed the child had fallen on a stool A 29-year-old man has been convicted of a "horrific" sexual assault on a two-year-old girl which left her needing "extensive surgery".

Polish national Piotr Skut carried out the attack while he was supposedly caring for the toddler at his home in Glasgow's Townhead area last April.

He claimed the child was injured after falling against a stool but was caught after his DNA was found on her.

Judge Lady Dorrian deferred and remanded Skut in custody.

The trial at the High Court in Glasgow heard how Skut was looking after the child while her mother went shopping.

'Horrific' injuries

The woman told the court how she later received a phone call from Skut, who begged her to hurry home as her daughter was bleeding.

The mum-of-two told the jury that there were no problems with her daughter before she left.

The child was rushed to the city's Royal Hospital for Sick Children before she underwent surgery.

One medic told the court that the child's injuries were "the most horrific ever seen".

The jury, which unanimously convicted Skut of indecently assaulting the child to her severe injury, also heard he carried out the attack weeks after downloading a video clip showing similar abuse.

Lady Dorrian deferred sentence until next month for reports.
