Defendant found dead in jail cell

23 June 2011 Last updated at 12:24 GMT Bishop Street Court House Mr Duffy was due to appear at the Magistrates Court in Derry A Londonderry man who was due to appear in court on Thursday has been found dead in his prison cell.

Patrick Gerald Duffy, 49, of Nassau Street, in Derry, faced charges of criminal damage, and assault.

Mr Duffy was found dead in his cell at Maghaberry Prison on Thursday morning. Both charges were withdrawn.

In a statement, the Department of Justice said there were "no signs of suspicious circumstances".

It said Mr Duffy had been found dead in his Foyle House cell shortly after midnight.

"Mr Duffy's family have been notified and in line with standard procedures, the PSNI, coroner, and prisoner ombudsman have been informed and investigations are under way," the statement added.

Director General of the Northern Ireland Prison Service, Colin McConnell, expressed his sympathy to the Duffy family on behalf of the service.
