Major search for missing teenager

16 July 2011 Last updated at 11:05 GMT A teenager who went missing overnight after falling from a pier in Donegal had been enjoying a birthday celebration.

The 17-year-old man, believed to be from Derry, fell into the water at Rathmullan pier, Donegal at about 0130 BST on Saturday.

Irish police, the coastguard and lifeboat crews have taken part in overnight searches along the lough.

The youth's family are keeping watch at the pier where he was last seen.

Joe Joyce from Lough Swilly RNLI said an extensive search was carried out overnight fro Rathmullan to Ramelton and Letterkenny.

The coastguard helicopter joined in.

"Conditions were not great. There was a lot of cloud cover and mist. We did a number of parallel searches along the lough using flares to illuminate the area," he said.

"The coastguard and the helicopter were there using infra red technology to detect the person.

"We searched all night."

A diving club and local people are helping look for the missing man.

"I believe it was just a birthday celebration that went wrong," Mr Joyce said.

"I know the family are there on the pier keeping watch."

'Web attack' teenager in custody

23 June 2011 Last updated at 11:44 GMT Keyboard The teenager has been remanded in police custody for three days A 19-year-old man charged with five computer offences, including attacking the Serious Organised Crime Agency's website, has been remanded in custody.

Ryan Cleary, from Wickford, Essex, did not enter any plea when he appeared at City of Westminster Magistrates' Court.

Mr Cleary was remanded in police custody for three days.

The teenager was arrested at his family home on Monday as part of a Scotland Yard and FBI probe into attacks on a number of websites.

Ben Cooper, defending, told the court: "He has been assisting with police inquiries so far and is keen to continue doing so."

Mr Cleary will be detained at London's Charing Cross police station for further questioning.

The teenager is alleged to have set up a distributed denial of service attack on the Serious Organised Crime Agency (Soca) on 20 June.

A distributed denial of service typically involves flooding a target website with data, in an attempt to overwhelm it so it cannot serve its legitimate users.

He has also been accused of attacking the website of the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry in November 2010.

Mr Cleary allegedly attacked the British Phonographic Industry's website in October.

He was charged under the Criminal Law Act and Computer Misuse Act by the Met Police's e-crime unit.

The charges against Mr Cleary include conspiring with other unknown people on or before 20 June to construct a botnet - a collection of hijacked home computers - to conduct distributed denial of service attacks.

He is also charged with making, adapting, supplying or offering to supply a botnet, intending that it should be used to commit, or to assist in the commission of a distributed denial of service attack.

Teenager admits child sex charges

27 May 2011 Last updated at 14:18 GMT Jake Ormerod. Pic: Torbay News Agency Ormerod admitted charges covering a three-year period A man has admitted abusing girls he met through Facebook, after his arrest during a large-scale inquiry into child sexual exploitation in south Devon.

Jake Ormerod, 19, of Torquay, admitted 13 charges at Exeter Crown Court relating to eight girls as young as 13.

Police said he was part of a paedophile gang who used the social networking site to target victims.

Ring members groomed and targeted homeless youngsters and picked up children outside schools, police said.

Ormerod, of Babbacombe Road, was arrested in February by officers investigating the exploitation of children from the Torbay and Teignbridge areas.

More arrests expected

Thousands of parents at south Devon schools were sent letters in February informing them that a major child abuse investigation, Operation Mansfield, was being carried out by Devon and Cornwall Police.

Ormerod admitted one charge of sexual assault on a child aged under 13, plus 12 charges of sexual activity with a child - seven when he was aged under 18 and five when he was 18.

The charges covered a period of three years.

He was remanded in custody and is due to be sentenced in July following psychological reports.

After Ormerod's admissions, Det Insp Simon Snell, who is leading Operation Mansfield, said he was "pleased that the vulnerable victims have been spared the ordeal of having to attend court and give evidence".

He added that officers expected to make more arrests in connection with the paedophile ring.

Drink and drugs

He said: "We have interviewed more than 40 children and I do not think we have finished yet.

"There may be more arrests to be made as the investigation focuses.

"Facebook is one of the features. Ormerod had an account and we are actively investigating the links that site provides us."

He said the gang, of which Ormerod was part, would ply vulnerable girls with drink and drugs before abusing them at their homes, which were well known to homeless children.

Det Insp Snell said: "They used Facebook and met them via the site. Slowly and surely they began to pretend that they were the boyfriends of the victims.

"But there is no way these girls could pretend to be the girlfriends of sex offenders."

Victims who were identified were supported by multi-agency professionals - including police, Torbay Council's children's services and the NHS - police said at the time the letters were sent.
