Fundraising pupils smoked drugs

28 June 2011 Last updated at 09:51 GMT Four pupils were expelled and another 10 suspended from a Berkshire school when they were caught smoking cannabis during a 10-mile fundraising walk.

The pupils at Theale Green Community School, Theale, had been taking part in an annual sponsored walk in June.

Four pupils were expelled for bringing the drugs and the other 10 were suspended for possession.

Thames Valley Police said its schools officer was aware of the incident but there would be "no police action".

Head teacher Sue Marshall said she was "very concerned and disappointed".

She said she had taken a "very firm stance" and the expulsions and suspensions gave "a clear message to all students that it has no place in school life".

Drugs programme

"Sadly use of cannabis is very common in society and it is readily and cheaply available. The students involved behaved with great naivety and now deeply regret their behaviour.

"I have spoken to all students regarding the incident and have made my expectations very clear.

"Those who will be returning to us after their exclusions will be involved in a drugs awareness programme involving health advisers and the police."

Every pupil in the school took part in the walk, which raised ?8,000 towards sports equipment, including a new basketball court.
